Session 1: 9:00-10:15 AM
Rebuilding Your Educational Paradigm

In this inspiring and empowering session, you will not only come to understand the nature and purpose of today's educational system as it was originally conceived and designed, but you will see a shining alternative path, one that develops true thinkers, leaders, and communicators.

Session 2: 10:15-11:45 AM
Mastery Learning

Come and hear how, as Dr. Suzuki puts it, "Every child can learn," and you can create success in areas where you or your children have struggled in the past.

Session 3: 1:00-2:30 PM
Four Deadly Errors of Teaching Writing

We've all suffered it at one time or another: Frustration about writing assignments. Either on the receiving end, or perhaps now on the giving end, there can be a few distinctly discouraging aspects to teaching and being taught writing. The tough questions include: What should I correct and how do I give a grade? How much help is too much? Isn't the assignment clear enough? Why don't students find their own errors? Learn and avoid four teaching mistakes that contribute to this frustration: Overcorrecting, Holding Back Help, Unclear Assignments, & Over-Expectation.

Session 4: 6:30-8:00 PM
Nurturing Excellent Writers and Speakers

Many parents think that good readers will naturally become good writers. Others think that writing talent is just that--a natural ability--some have it; others don't. Both are myths. History and modern research show very clearly how good writers have developed. What are the two most critical things you can do as a parent to develop a high level of aptitude, from a young age and into high school? With humor and insight, Andrew will share the two easy but unbelievably powerful things you can do to build language patterns and nurture competent communicators in your family.

Homeschool Advocacy Project - Homeschool Admissions Day at UW

Homeschool Admissions Day

I've noticed that some homeschooling parents start getting nervous when their kids hit 9th grade. This is high school--this counts. In my family, the word "documentation" started getting thrown around a lot, and we started a homeschool transcript draft to build on over the next few years. For homeschoolers who want to go on to college, describing our educational experiences in the terms that the colleges want can seem more intimidating than doing all that writing, math, and volunteering for which we're now trying to properly give ourselves "credit."

I want this event to help homeschooled students make their applications represent their educational experiences in ways that are both accurate and accessible to admissions counselors.
Homeschool Admissions Day 2011 will take place on Saturday, April 23, at the University of Washington, Seattle campus. I will be working with my mentor, UW admissions counselor Grant Twitchell, and other former homeschoolers who are students here at UW to make this event a success.

At this point, the event will include:

having a session with a University of Washington Admissions Counselor on how to construct an effective homeschool transcript that gives them the information they need in the format they prefer.

participating in a personal essay writing workshop

a student panel of former homeschoolers who are currently attending college

a small college fair with representatives prepared to speak to homeschool admission requirements at various colleges

Parents (though not younger siblings) are welcome to attend everything except for the personal essay workshop.

During the personal essay workshop, I will arrange for parents:

a session on financial aid and filling out the FAFSA

I chose a weekend so that Running Start students don't have to miss classes, so that parents who work on weekdays can attend, so that the college students involved don't have to miss our classes, and because there was greater room availability. However, I really wanted the event to be on a weekday so that participants could get a real sense of the UW campus when it is populated and bustling, and so we could visit classes.

To accommodate both of these goals, I'm setting up activities for the afternoon of Friday, April 22nd, the day before the main event.

On Friday, we'll:

visit a class

go on a campus tour

have open time to visit specific departments and/or see advisers in the majors students are particularly interested in

(a social event in the evening, to be determined)

The event will be for students who are ages 15 and up. After older kids have registered, 14-year-olds who are in 9th grade may register on a space-available basis. If you have younger students and would like to work on transcripts or other college readiness, you are welcome to contact me. I can work with you to set something up separately.

Registration for this event will begin in January. There will be a small cost to cover lunch and room rentals. If the cost will represent a substantial hardship for your family, please contact us at hapuw@uw.edu and we can make arrangements.

I plan to arrange home stays with local homeschooling families for people who want to participate in both Friday and Saturday and who may drive from long distances, to avoid hotel costs. If you are interested in this (either hosting or being hosted), please contact me.
I'm really hoping there will be a lot of interest in participating in this event so that it can become an annual offering to the homeschooling community.

Homeschooling Struggling Learners e-event

Homeschooling Struggling Learners

Sept. 28, 9PM

Oct. 26, 9PM

Is homeschooling a viable option for special needs kids? Are there particular teaching strategies that really work? How can you tell which curriculum is best for the challenges your child faces?

We want to answer your questions with two great @home e-vents crafted especially with you in mind! Faith Berens, one of HSLDA’s special needs coordinators, will present two online workshops on how to home educate your child with learning challenges.

In “Homeschooling Struggling Learners: Yes, You Can Do It!” Faith will offer tips on how to begin or continue homeschooling your struggling learner. In addition, she will provide you with information on the steps you should take to ensure that you are legally protected as a homeschooler with a special needs child. Mark Tuesday, September 28, @ 9:00 p.m. ET on your calendar and come find out how hundreds of other parents of struggling learners are teaching their kids at home!

Faith will join us again on Tuesday, October 26, @ 9:00 p.m. ET to share more about the everyday tactics and tools you need to teach your struggling learner at home. Amid a sea of curricula, learn how to find the one that is right for your child. And because teaching a special needs child requires extra steps, gain insight from someone who has developed teaching techniques based on years of experience. “The Nuts and Bolts of Homeschooling Your Struggling Learner” will leave you encouraged as well as informed.

Attending the first e-vent is not required in order to attend the second; however, we strongly encourage you to attend both to gain maximum insight about how to best educate your child.
If you can’t attend the e-vent live, don’t worry! All of our events are recorded and available to view at your convenience within a few days following the live session. If you purchase the live e-vent, you will be able to view the recording at no extra charge for 30 days. You will receive a link for the archive in your account purchase history a few days following the live e-vent.

Don’t miss these exciting e-vents—sign up now to reserve your “seat”! Register now >>. If you have any questions, please contact the @home e-vent team at Athome@hslda.org.

Free Camp for Physically Disabled Children

Free Camp for physically disabled children - 8 slots open!
August 18 - 21, 2010

They need 8 children to sign up so they can have camp this year! It's totally FREE. You don't need to pay to register.

http://www.campaccess.org/
Camp ACCESS Foundation was established in May of 2002 to provide a summer camp experience to physically disabled children. The camp's stated goal is to introduce our campers to the latest in adaptive recreation equipment (adaptive kayaking, adaptive sailing, hand-cycles, fishing, swimming and other skill building activities such as our "wheelchair obstacle course" designed after the wheelchair obstacle course used at the National Veteran Wheelchair Games). It is our belief that if we can help improve the skill level and confidence of youth with physical disabilities through recreation, then we also help improve their confidence with day to day living skills.

At Camp ACCESS we use Certified Recreational Therapists as Team Leaders. Our Team Coaches are young adult Paralyzed Veterans with demonstrated Athletic skills (medal winners at the National Wheelchair Games, Participants in the "Seattle to Portland" Bike marathon Disabled riders who have ridden their hand-cycles the 206 mile distance over 2 days). Over the 4 days of Camp ACCESS participants are encouraged to expand their personal limits, try new activities and develop new personal skills that will carry over into their day to day living skills. All our staff are volunteers from local communities. We also utilize local high school and college students who volunteer and go through a training program to work one on one with our campers.

The student volunteer's role is to partner with the camper and provide encouragement and assistance with simple care needs (sunscreen application, water, towels etc). These student volunteers also work with our equipment manager to move kayaks and sail boats to and from the water and help set up and maintain the wheelchair obstacle course. We find the student volunteers benefit greatly through their volunteer experience by gaining a better understanding of disabilities. This serves to normalize disabilities within the group and bring our disabled children into a more normalized summer activity environment.

This year camp will be held from Thursday 8/19/10 through Saturday 8/21/10 at Flowing Lake County Park.

Year after year we discuss what we could do to make camp better or to make it different than the previous years. The answer is always "not much." It's awesome just as it is. No one is tired of the experience because most of us only get this experience once a year.Another way we can tell that camp is working is the fact that campers return year after year. Some campers say it's the highlight of their summer! Many camper families have found that the best way to experience camp is to make it family vacation and camp at the Flowing Lake Campground.

To make your campsite reservation click here. This camp experience would not be possible without volunteers and we have great volunteers!! Our able-bodied peer volunteers return year after year and they recruit their friends. We're finding that they are returning even as they enter their college years. It's great to have trusted, experienced volunteers. We're also very fortunate to have the expertise of licensed professionals who develop and implement our curriculum and experienced disabled athletes who lead the activities.

Camp ACCESS provides a great experience with various indoor and outdoor sports such as kayaking, inner-tubing, court sports, fishing, soccer, volleyball, hand-cycling, and air rifles. It also provides an enriching, social environment where you get to meet other kids and adults with disabilities who are living full, productive lives.

We'll talk to some experts and explore the very tasty world of gluten–free eating.

Guest(s)Shauna James Ahern writes the blog, Gluten Free Girl, and is the author of "Gluten–Free Girl: How I Found the Food That Loves Me Back ... And How You Can Too." She has celiac disease.

Introduction to Relationship Development Intervention

Introduction to RDI (Relationship Development Intervention)
Presented by Carrie Sheppard, LMHC

Maybe you have heard of RDI and are curious enough to learn more about it. This is an ideal opportunity to be introduced to the basics of RDI, a parent-driven model for addressing the core deficits of autism. Come see videos of parents using RDI and the dramatic results they achieve with their children, as they move from a world of solitary play to active engagement with their parents and others. Children who struggle with rigidity and attention issues become self confident, flexible thinkers and problem solvers under their parent's careful guidance. The basics of what an RDI program looks like and how a parent can begin will be covered. Appropriate for: Parents

Tips for Retaining and Generalizing Skills

Make it Stick! Tips for Retaining and Generalizing Skills
Presented by Carrie Sheppard, LMHC

Ever wonder why people with autism have such fantastic memories for facts, lines from movies, and other seemingly-trivial bits of information, while some of the other skills we try to teach just won't stick?

"Make it stick!" addresses autobiographical memory--a specific type of memory deficit characteristic of autistic individuals. Lack of this type of memory is partially responsible for poor generalization of social skills taught by most programs. It is also a factor in anxiety, low self-esteem, and underdeveloped sense of identity.

This session will help you learn how to promote better application of skills taught and how to nurture a more positive sense of self in children on the autism spectrum. Appropriate for: Parents and professionals

Are You Thinking What I'm Thinking? (autism)

Are You Thinking What I'm Thinking?
Presented by Carrie Sheppard, LMHC

Ever feel like you're on a different planet from your autistic child? Like your wavelengths rarely intersect? This session will introduce you to some valuable techniques that will help you and your child become more attuned to each other's mental and emotional states. Getting "in sync" with each other provides an important developmental foundation for future social success.

Some of the steps leading to relationship competence begin with building the motivation to join minds together in attention, thought and action. Genuine interest and empathy follows quite naturally.

Through practical instruction and video clips, you'll see how parents and therapists work with children to develop shared understanding that will help cultivate valuable connections. You will learn some of the cognitive and emotional benefits of using these techniques. Appropriate for: Parents and professionals

You Are More Valuable to Your Child Than Any Therapist Will Ever Be

You Are More Valuable to Your Child Than Any Therapist Will Ever Be
Presented by Carrie Sheppard, LMHC

The decisions parents face after a diagnosis of an autism spectrum disorder are mind boggling and laden with emotion. Parents wonder: Am I doing enough for my child? Am I choosing the right therapies? How will I pay for it all? This class is based on the notion that effective treatment can happen in the context of "normal" family life and that the parents' natural role as guide to their child can hold greater therapeutic value than many of the expensive, often overused therapies --- some of which fail to provide noticeable value in "real life." Come learn ways to enjoy family life more and focus on helping your child's development on a daily basis. The whole family can benefit from an enhanced quality of life while also targeting your child's specific developmental goals! Appropriate for: Parents

Sensory Processing and Strategies for Self-Regulation
Presented by Mary Fuhr, OTR/L and Carrie Sheppard, LMHC
Does your child overreact to sensory stimulation: sounds, flashing lights, textures of clothing or foods? Or seem oblivious to things others pay attention to? Does your child maintain an activity level that is way too high or way too low? These and other symptoms could signal a sensory processing disorder.

Self-Regulation--the ability to master appropriate responses to the stresses of everyday living--is a critical factor in the development of a young child. Because this ability can have a significant impact of all areas of interaction throughout a lifetime, it is crucial--especially for a child on the autism spectrum--to learn strategies for self-calming, regulating responses to stimuli, and managing attention and emotional responsiveness.

In this two-part class, Carrie and Mary will help you learn to identify some of the symptoms of sensory processing disorders and recognize the relationship between these disorders and the management of emotions, behavior, communication, and social interactions. You'll go home with practical and enjoyable strategies you can use to help your child learn to self-regulate and improve his or her ability to cope with the demands of a dynamic and often bewildering world. Appropriate for: Parents and Professionals. Appropriate for: Parents and Professionals

Session 2: Many more practical, hands-on strategies will be demonstrated and experienced, and information from your personal homework may be shared as live examples for solution brainstorming. Video examples of regulation strategies in action will demonstrate effective methods for meltdown management and prevention, and for promoting optimal attention. "You got rave reviews...your knowledge and expertise really added to our therapists' knowledge." Clinical Education Coordinator of a national symposium

Estate and financial planning is a particular challenge, and the government doesn't make it easy to understand. Mark Albertson, Senior Counsel at Albertson Law Group, has created this workshop for parents, caregivers and professionals who work with families with children with special needs, to present in a clear way the steps that are needed in order to prepare properly.

The workshop will cover:
* Getting the right advisors to help you
* Understanding how to create a "lifecare" plan
* Drafting a will or living trust
* Understanding how goverment benefits work
* Establishing a special needs trust
* Determining how to fund a special needs trust
* Considering a guardianship and exploring the alternatives
